He wasn’t always a solo artist… You may have already heard Johnny Lloyd’s vocals and songwriting if you’re familiar with the band Tribes. Lloyd served as their frontman during their three year tenure beginning back in 2010. Some of the band’s members, Lloyd included, were also formerly in another band called Operahouse. Notable Tribes songs include ‘We Were Children’ and ‘Corner Of An English Field’. While together, the band supported a whole manner of indie and rock’s heavy hitters such as Mystery Jets, The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Pixies and even The Rolling Stones.
You might have seen his partner on Dr Who… Johnny Lloyd’s partner is acclaimed actress Billie Piper, who has appeared in television shows such as ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Penny Dreadful’ and ‘Secret Diary of a Call Girl’. The couple have a daughter together, Tallulah, who was born in January 2019. The cover of his debut album ‘The Next Episode Starts in 15 Seconds’
Frank Turner appears on his debut album… Johnny Lloyd became good friends with folk-punk artist Frank Turner when they became labelmates on Xtra Mile Recordings. Turner lends his vocals on the title track of Lloyd’s ‘The Next Episode Starts in 15 Seconds’. In addition to Turner, Lloyd enlisted the help of Hugo White (The Maccabees) and Adam Prendergast from Harry Styles’ band.
Living in America inspired some of his debut album… Lloyd lived stateside for two years and this had a significant impact on some of the material on his album. The track ‘Mass Shooting’ is an emotional protest against people who blame gun violence on everything but the availability of guns and the mass shooters themselves. Lloyd explains “I’ve spent a lot of time in America in the last two years. You just can’t go a day without a shooting. It feels frightening and confusing. I love America but I don’t agree with the politics and I felt like writing about it. It’s not a subject matter I would have gone near in the past.”
Lloyd has already began planning album number two… While ‘The Next Episode Starts in 15 Seconds’ was only released in May, on July 20th he gave his fans an update on Facebook about his next album. Of it he said “So excited about this second album I’m currently making. It’s fully electric, loud emotional vibes. It will be out next May with any luck. At which point I’ll be going full band with things again. I love playing acoustic but I also love really loud rock and roll… so we’ll see where that goes.”
