Feature: GNE 2020 Artist Focus – Martha Hill

At Gigs North East, we’re kicking off 2020 by shining a light on the North East’s emerging talent. In the coming weeks, we’ll be featuring artists who have caught our attention with their distinctive sounds and who we’re excited to see progress in the coming year…

First up, we’re focusing on Martha Hill. A singer-songwriter originally from a small peninsula in Scotland, Hill cut her teeth travelling around Europe as a street musician before settling in the North East where she began to develop her distinct blend of alt pop.

Last year saw Martha Hill release her latest E.P ‘Be Still’ which was championed by Huw Stephens at BBC Radio 1. With a string of U.K dates and an appearance at Hit The North festival already confirmed for 2020, we’re eager to see what else the songstress has up her sleeve in the next year.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

No, can’t, sorry. 😉

Who or what has influenced your sound the most?

I feel I am over-influenced! Every musician that has ever moved me ends up inspiring or influencing me in some way. I grew up loving all the great singer-songwriters (Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Neil Young) and then branched out from there. I’m revisiting a lot of Radiohead at the moment. I love it all.

What is your favourite song to play live at the moment?

I love playing ‘Blindfold’ live. It creates such a lush atmosphere that really seems to connect with the audience.

What are you most excited for in 2020?

I just want to get out and gig as much as possible this year. I already have a few slots at festivals lined up such as Hit The North and This Is TomorrowBefore that, I have a show at The Social in London on the 26th February and a tour following on from that which I’m pumped about.

What is the most memorable gig you’ve ever played?

I supported Maximo Park and Field Music at The Sage accompanied by an orchestra… that was pretty mental.

Who are your favourite artists from the North East at the moment?

Ceitidh Mac, Me Lost Me, Dansi, Holy Moly and the Crackers, Callum Pitt… all the usual suspects! So many mint artists in Newcastle at the moment.

Martha Hill will be performing at Hit The North festival this May, so make sure you grab a ticket sooner rather than later!
