Interview: KAWALA talk Hit the North festival, their new EP ‘Counting the Miles’ and what the rest of 2019 has in store

KAWALA are in for a super exciting summer; a headline tour, the recent release of their second EP ‘Counting the Miles’ and Newcastle’s Hit the North Festival! Emily Rose Jackson had a chat with them about what’s in store…

Having recently toured as support for Dodie, how are feeling about embarking on a headline tour?

Couldn’t be more buzzing for it!

Dodie fans are arguably the most receptive fans you could ever play to though so it’ll be interesting playing to our own crowds again and hopefully seeing a load of new faces.

You recently released your second EP ‘Counting the Miles’, how does the production process compare to performing it live?

With this EP, actually not a great deal. We wanted it to be way more focused on the arrangements we use live and to sound way more raw than our first EP.

You’re playing a ton of festivals this summer, how would you say they compare to touring?

Still getting used to both in all honesty!

The festivals we have played have been proper fun and it’s almost quite liberating not spending ages soundchecking & running straight on. You play your half an hour and then off you go.

You’re headed to Newcastle to play Hit the North festival, which songs are you most excited to play live?

Hopefully some new songs we’ve been working on. Also the classics that go down well at shows like Runaway and a terribly named song we play called Epic.

What are your plans as a band for the rest of 2019?

After the May tour, just keep writing and recording, hopefully put some music out imminently and continuing to gig as much as possible!
