Preview: Alabama 3 – 24/05/19 – Riverside, Newcastle

With elements of spoken word, country, gospel, blues and electronic in the mix, Alabama 3 is definitely one of the oddest musical outfits to arise from late-’90s London. But they have something for everyone and you can see them at Riverside, Newcastle on 24th May…

The band formed when Jake Black and Rob Spragg came up with the idea that a fusion of country music with house was a musical possibility. As the idea of the band began to take shape in Brixton, London, Black and Spragg managed to get a crew of musicians on board to shape their vision.

Alabama 3 are unique, to say the least. If musical conventions are anything to go by, this bizarre fusion of genres shouldn’t really work but it somehow does. This, combined with brilliantly theatrical live shows, meant the band attracted a huge South London following long before they had a record deal.

In 1997, One Little Indian signed the band. Their debut ‘Exile on Coldharbour Lane’ was a groundbreaking work that combined gospel, country, blues, and house music.

Alabama 3 have had their songs featured heavily in the media. Cult TV series ‘The Sopranos’ employed the band’s ‘Woke Up This Morning’ as its theme music. ‘The Simpsons’, ‘Top Gear’, ‘Criminal Minds’ and ‘Torchwood’ have also featured their music.

They have released thirteen studio albums to date and have maintained a loyal global following. 21 years on from their iconic debut album ‘Exile On Coldharbour Lane’, they continue unleashing material via their own independent label Hostage Music.

Don’t miss out on your chance to see this truly one of a kind act when they perform in Newcastle.
