Nottingham-born Joel Baker has been immersed in music since a young age. Playing the guitar as a child, and then starting a band whilst still at school, he’s certainly enthusiastic in his mission to make music.
He creates tunes that sit in that vague category of dreamy and emotional. Yet unlike fellow songwriters who fall short of the mark and are too drippy and heavy, Baker gets it just right. It’s soulful folk-pop that is actually a real pleasure to listen to. His tangy but mellow voice enhances his interesting lyrics, giving his music something extra.
Baker deserves his place alongside popular singer-songwriters (similarly wispy in vocals) like Ben Howard. Gathering attention online, with tens of thousands of streams, as well as international popularity, Baker is doing rather well.
Initially relocating to London to kick-start his career, the artist released his debut EP ‘Long Sleeves’ in 2013. Second EP ‘Every Vessel’ followed in 2014 before he was signed to Virgin Records in 2016.
His third release, ‘Bag Of Dreams Mixtape’, was a success and in 2018 Baker released the Winter Dreams EP. It included the hit single ‘Rupi Kaur’, and has helped spread Baker’s talent far and wide.
Let’s hope Joel Baker has more to give us in 2019. Catch him play at Tynemouth’s Surf Cafe on the 13th of April.
