Soph Nathan, Josh Tyler and Lauren Wilson are not only best friends in real life but also the trio who make up the band.
Combining grunge, shoegaze and psychedelic music, they have created a stunning sound. Self described as “…a band beginning to grasp their own value and place in the world,” Our Girl have made a quietly confident debut album ‘Stranger Today.’
The record possesses moments of sweet vulnerability but also contrasting turbulence at other points. ‘I really like it,’ is a coy declaration of romantic feelings tinted with bittersweet nostalgia. ‘Being Around,’ is a powerful tribute to people who show care towards you. Meanwhile ‘Boring’ taunts the listener with its cryptic lyrics and thorny instrumentals.
Nathan’s voice often seem to be at odds with her guitar. The instrument broods for the most part while at any other time it simply seems downright aggressive. Yet, somehow the combination with her honeyed vocals makes the listener feel safe in the surrounding chaos.
Tyler and Wilson manage to complement Nathan while showing their own well defined identities. Bass lines and hooks from Tyler give Our Girl Tracks their addictive quality while Wilson’s drums heighten the emotion and nuance.
When live, the Brighton trio manage to distill the raw power of their tracks into a breathtaking experience. Tickets for the Our Girl Newcastle show are well over half way gone so grab your quickly!
