Preview: Sophie And The Giants – 22/03/19 – Think Tank? Underground, Newcastle

Sheffield’s young retro-poppers Sophie And The Giants are heading out on an eight-date UK tour this March, which will call in at Newcastle’s very own Think Tank? Underground on Friday 22nd…

Sophie is Sophie Scott on vocals and guitar whilst her Giants are Toby Holmes on lead guitar, Bailey Stapledon on bass and Chris Hill on drums. They may not be giants of the music scene just yet, but that is set to change. Their authentic sound appealing to anyone with a love of Blondie, Siouxsie & The Banshees, and Radiohead.

The band only formed at college in 2017 but have already toured with the likes of Tom Greenan, Yonaka and Reverand & The Makers. Following the joint move from their hometown of Staines to the steel city of Sheffield, living and growing together as a band. In October 2018, they released their much-heralded debut EP ‘Adolescence.’ Containing three tracks that show perhaps all that time together has paid off.

These tracks define the band, individually unique whilst also telling a bigger story. A story of strength through courage and adversity. Lead track ‘Waste My Air’ was written about a toxic relationship that Sophie went through with the band’s original guitarist. It’s the realisation that she was better off walking away and allowing herself to grow as a person and an artist. Another track ‘Bulldog’ is about a domestic assault on one of the band’s friends. Other songs like ‘Space Girl’ and ‘Stone Cold’ are honest and thoughtful takes on being a girl. Simultaneously growing up in the midst of other people’s expectations.

It all makes for compelling listening and the band’s fresh sound makes them unmissable. Sophie and her Giants could well be poised to go gigantic in the near future so get in early whilst you still can.
