Derived from Sanskrit meaning ‘Beautiful Karma’, the group have nailed the indie spiritualism thing. To add to this, frontman Oscar Pollock is forever experimenting with his appearance and fashion, and thus embodies the wild personality of the group as a whole.
They came to our attention in 2014 with EP and single ‘Indigo Puff’, a jingly-jangly feel-good tune with a smart kick to it that cemented their unique sound. They hit us with ‘EP I’ and ‘EP II’ the following year before bursting through the doors with debut album ‘Youth Is Over Ever Fun In Retrospect’ in 2017.
It’s a belter of an album, filled to bursting point with indie bangers. ‘Explore’, ‘Happy Family’, ‘Flame’, ‘She Said’, and ‘Vivienne’ all make up the album. With millions of online streams, they are songs you know even if you don’t know Sundara Karma.
The band is made up of Oscar Pollock (vocals/guitar), Ally Baty (lead guitar), Dom Cordell (bass), and Hadyn Evans (drums). They’re a concoction of flavour and style, with Pollock’s oscillating vocals springing them ahead in the quirky indie genre. NME has pitted them against the likes of Arcade Fire, Foals, and the sadly missed The Maccabees. A group of brilliant artists they rightly belong to.
Second album ‘Ulfilas’ Alphabet’ was released earlier this year, 1st March 2019, and continues in the same vein of catchy indie-pop, with a futuristic edge of electronic beats and synths.
Still standing as a guitar band is hard these days, what with the plethora of music genres around. But Sundara Karma is standing strong. So they should with the sound they create.
